Aesthetically pleasing wooden and iron chest, an antique curved trunk that stands out for its sturdiness and attention to detail. Made of poplar wood, the body of the chest is covered with wrought iron and decorated over the entire surface, adding a touch of classic elegance. External hardwood reinforcements, probably oak, give further solidity to this period piece.
Designed for ship travel and extreme transport conditions, this vintage curved trunk is characterized by a very solid and resistant structure. The aesthetic aspect is particularly refined, with delicate floral decorations painted on the sides and on the lid, recalling the decorative art of the time. It can be closed with two lateral hooks and a central lock with key, thus increasing the functionality of the chest. It is completely original in all its parts, with the exception of a lateral leather handle that has been replaced because it was missing, and the key, also lost and replaced with a key belonging to the same period and style as the trunk.
The lid bears inscriptions attesting to the owner and the voyage from the port of Salerno to the port of Naples in Southern Italy, towards the United States of America, presumably New York, thus testifying to the adventurous history of this fascinating wooden chest.
The interior, also made of poplar wood, is lined with decorated paper, maintaining the original lining in the lid. However, in the bottom of the chest, much of the lining was missing, so it was restored to wood and then painted and protected to preserve the authentic appearance of the chest.
As for the restoration, we tried to preserve as much of the original as possible, intervening only to protect and ensure durability over time. A careful restoration has been completed and it is now ready for use, adding value not only as a decorative object but also as a collector's item for antique enthusiasts.
